I have an idea, let’s stop dieting.
Seriously, even if it’s not called a “diet.” If the new way of eating is in fact new + has lots of rules + restrictions, let’s stop for a little while.
New Year’s Resolution: don’t diet, don't take things away.
Instead: Give yourself MORE.
I’m serious. Give yourself more time, more space, more rest, more love, more play, more adventure, more music, more art, more travel, more walks, more cuddles, more hugs.
What do you really want more of?
Let’s focus on that for awhile, see what happens.
Perhaps you’ll notice something, hear something inside of you. Sometimes I get an overwhelming urge to run (and let me tell you I kind of hate to run). Sometimes I really want to eat a huge bowl of roasted brussels sprouts.
Sometimes I want to spend Saturday morning snuggled up in bed reading or watching a movie + I want to eat something cheesy.
Most of us have a hard time accepting these fluctuations. I certainly have. I thought that if I wanted to watch TV all Saturday morning that I’d become a lazy, fat couch potato and never get anything done. Or if I ate the cookies that my neighbor brought over that I’d certainly become addicted to sugar, a terrible mother + my husband would never think I’m sexy again.
These are the things floating around, keeping us anxious about every move we make.
What most people don’t understand is that we are constantly changing. If we don’t get all wrapped up in judging ourselves we will have days that are restful, slow + lazy just as surely as we’ll have days of activity, high energy + excitement.
We can avoid a lot of the worry, fear + energy wasting that comes from trying to micro manage everything. Your body knows it feels good to get outside and move, it knows that it needs rest, it knows it feels good to bake with your kids + it knows a bowl of vegetable soup feels nourishing.
Your job isn’t to be skinny + wrinkle free. Your job is to LIVE. So give yourself more of that. Put little habits in place to keep you centered + set yourself up for more freedom + satisfaction.
Don’t exercise because you have to (and definitely don’t do it to lose weight, because it doesn’t work and we’re not doing that, remember), go on a hike because you love the fall leaves, walk on the beach sunset moves your soul, go kayaking to be calmed by the silence or rake leaves + jump in the piles to play with your kids.
